王子与公主
thE pRINcE ANd pRINcESS
格尔达不得不再次休息，就在她坐的地方对面，她看到一只大乌鸦跳着穿过雪地向她走来。
Gerda was obliged to rest again, and just opposite the place where she sat, she saw a great crow e hopping across the snow toward her.
他站着看了她一会儿，然后摇了摇头说：“呱，呱；
he stood looking at her for some time, and then he wagged his head and said, “caw, caw;
你好，你好。”
good - day, good - day.”
他尽可能清楚地说出这些话，因为他想对小女孩表示友好；
he pronounced the words as plainly as he could, because he meant to be kind to the little girl;
然后他问她，在这广阔的世界里她独自一人要去哪里。
and then he asked her where she was going all alone in the wide world.

the word alone Gerda understood very well, and knew how much it expressed.
于是她把自己的生活和冒险经历的整个故事都告诉了乌鸦，还问他是否见过小凯。
So then she told the crow the whole story of her life and adventures, and asked him if he had seen little Kay.
乌鸦非常严肃地点了点头，说：“也许我见过 —— 可能吧。”
the crow nodded his head very gravely, and said, “perhaps I have — it may be.”
“不！你真的这么认为吗？”
“No! do you think you have?”
小格尔达叫道，她亲吻着乌鸦，高兴得几乎把他抱得喘不过气来。
cried little Gerda, and she kissed the crow, and hugged him almost to death with joy.
“轻点，轻点，” 乌鸦说。
“Gently, gently,” said the crow.
“我想我知道。
“I believe I know.
我想可能是小凯；
I think it may be little Kay;
但他现在肯定因为公主而把你忘了。”
but he has certainly forgotten you by this time for the princess.”
“他和一位公主住在一起吗？”
“does he live with a princess?”
格尔达问。
asked Gerda.
“是的，听着，” 乌鸦回答，“但说你们的语言太难了。
“Yes, listen,” replied the crow, “but it is so difficult to speak your language.
如果你懂乌鸦的语言，那我就能解释得更好了。
If you understand the crows’ language then I can explain it better.
你懂吗？”

“No, I have never learnt it,” said Gerda, “but my grandmother understands it, and used to speak it to me.

I wish I had learnt it.”

“It does not matter,” answered the crow;
“我会尽我所能解释的，虽然解释得会很糟糕；”
“I will explain as well as I can, although it will be very badly done;”
然后他告诉了她自己所听到的事情。
and he told her what he had heard.
“在我们现在所在的这个王国里，” 他说，“住着一位公主，她非常聪明，她读过世界上所有的报纸，而且也都忘了，尽管她很聪明。
“In this kingdom where we now are,” said he, “there lives a princess, who is so wonderfully clever that she has read all the newspapers in the world, and forgotten them too, although she is so clever.
不久前，当她坐在她的宝座上时 —— 人们说那宝座不像通常想象的那么舒服 —— 她开始唱一首歌，这首歌的开头是这样的：
A short time ago, as she was sitting on her throne, which people say is not such an agreeable seat as is often supposed, she began to sing a song which mences in these words:
‘我为什么不结婚呢？’
‘why should I not be married?’
“确实为什么不呢？” 她说，于是她决定如果能找到一个有人跟他说话时知道如何回应的丈夫就结婚，而不是一个只会摆架子的人，因为那样太讨厌了。
‘why not indeed?’ said she, and so she determined to marry if she could find a husband who knew what to say when he was spoken to, and not one who could only look grand, for that was so tiresome.
然后她听到鼓声就把所有宫廷女眷都召集在一起，当她们听到她的打算时都非常高兴。
then she assembled all her court ladies together at the beat of the drum, and when they heard of her intentions they were very much pleased.

‘we are so glad to hear it,’ said they, we were talking about it ourselves the other day.’ You may believe that every word I tell you is true,” said the crow, “for I have a tame sweetheart who goes freely about the palace, and she told me all this.”

of course his sweetheart was a crow, for “birds of a feather flock together,” and one crow always chooses another crow.

“Newspapers were published immediately, with a border of hearts, and the initials of the princess among them.
报纸通告说每个英俊的年轻人都可以自由地到城堡来与公主交谈；
they gave notice that every young man who was handsome was free to visit the castle and speak with the princess;
那些被问话时能大声回答让别人听到的人，可以在宫殿里随意活动；
and those who could reply loud enough to be heard when spoken to, were to make themselves quite at home at the palace;
但是回答得最好的人将被选为公主的丈夫。
but the one who spoke best would be chosen as a husband for the princess.
是的，是的，你要相信我，这一切就像我坐在这里一样真实，” 乌鸦说。
Yes, yes, you may believe me, it is all as true as I sit here,” said the crow.
“人们成群结队地来了。
“the people came in crowds.
有大量的拥挤和奔走，但第一天和第二天都没有人成功。
there was a great deal of crushing and running about, but no one succeeded either on the first or second day.
他们在外面街上的时候都能说得很好，但是当他们走进宫殿大门，看到穿着银色制服的卫兵，楼梯上穿着金色制服的男仆，还有灯火通明的大厅时，他们就变得非常慌乱。
they could all speak very well while they were outside in the streets, but when they entered the palace gates, and saw the guards in silver uniforms, and the footmen in their golden livery on the staircase, and the great halls lighted up, they became quite confused.
当他们站在公主所坐的宝座前时，他们除了重复公主说的最后几个字之外什么都做不了；
And when they stood before the throne on which the princess sat, they could do nothing but repeat the last words she had said;
而她并没有特别的愿望再听到自己说过的话。
and she had no particular wish to hear her own words over again.
就好像他们在宫殿里的时候都吃了什么让人犯困的东西一样，因为他们直到回到街上才恢复过来并且开口说话。
It was just as if they had all taken something to make them sleepy while they were in the palace, for they did not recover themselves nor speak till they got back again into the street.
从城门到宫殿排着很长的一队人。
there was quite a long line of them reaching from the town - gate to the palace.
“我自己去看过他们，” 乌鸦说。
I went myself to see them,” said the crow.
“他们又饿又渴，因为在宫殿里他们连一杯水都没得到。
“they were hungry and thirsty, for at the palace they did not get even a glass of water.
一些最聪明的人带了几片黄油面包，但他们不和邻居分享；
Some of the wisest had taken a few slices of bread and butter with them, but they did not share it with their neighbors;
他们认为如果饿着肚子去见公主，自己成功的机会就更大。”
they thought if they went in to the princess looking hungry, there would be a better chance for themselves.”
“但是凯！跟我讲讲小凯的事！” 格尔达说，“他在人群里吗？”
“but Kay! tell me about little Kay!” said Gerda, “was he amongst the crowd?”
“等一下，我们马上就讲到他了。
“Stop a bit, we are just ing to him.
在第三天，有一个小个子兴高采烈地朝着宫殿走来，他既没骑马也没坐车，他的眼睛像你的一样闪闪发光；
It was on the third day, there came marching cheerfully along to the palace a little personage, without horses or carriage, his eyes sparkling like yours;
他有一头漂亮的长发，但他的衣服非常破旧。”
he had beautiful long hair, but his clothes were very poor.”
“那就是凯！” 格尔达高兴地说。
“that was Kay!” said Gerda joyfully.
“哦，那我找到他了；”
“oh, then I have found him;”
她拍起手来。
and she clapped her hands.
“他背上背着一个小背包，” 乌鸦补充道。
“he had a little knapsack on his back,” added the crow.
“不，那一定是他的雪橇，” 格尔达说；
“No, it must have been his sledge,” said Gerda;
“因为他是带着雪橇走的。”
“for he went away with it.”
“可能是这样，” 乌鸦说；
“It may have been so,” said the crow;
“我没有仔细看。
I did not look at it very closely.
但是我从我温顺的爱人那里得知，他穿过宫殿大门，看到了穿着银色制服的卫兵和楼梯上穿着金色制服的仆人，但他一点也不尴尬。
but I know from my tame sweetheart that he passed through the palace gates, saw the guards in their silver uniform, and the servants in their liveries of gold on the stairs, but he was not in the least embarrassed.
‘站在楼梯上一定很烦人，’他说。
‘It must be very tiresome to stand on the stairs,’ he said.
‘我更想进去。’房间里灯火辉煌。
‘I prefer to go in.’ the rooms were blazing with light.
大臣们和大使们光着脚走来走去，手里拿着金制容器；
councillors and ambassadors walked about with bare feet, carrying golden vessels;
这足以让任何人都感到严肃。
it was enough to make any one feel serious.
他走路的时候靴子嘎吱嘎吱地响得很厉害，但他一点也不不安。”
his boots creaked loudly as he walked, and yet he was not at all uneasy.”
“那一定是凯，” 格尔达说，“我知道他穿了新靴子，我在祖母房间里听到过靴子嘎吱嘎吱响。”
“It must be Kay,” said Gerda, “I know he had new boots on, I have heard them creak in grandmother’s room.”
“靴子确实嘎吱响，” 乌鸦说，“然后他大胆地走到公主面前，公主正坐在一颗像纺车那么大的珍珠上，宫廷里所有的女士都带着她们的女仆在场，所有的骑士都带着他们的仆人；
“they really did creak,” said the crow, “yet he went boldly up to the princess herself, who was sitting on a pearl as large as a spinning wheel, and all the ladies of the court were present with their maids, and all the cavaliers with their servants;
而且每个女仆都有另一个女仆来伺候她，骑士们的仆人也有他们自己的仆人，此外每人还有一个侍从。
and each of the maids had another maid to wait upon her, and the cavaliers’ servants had their own servants, as well as a page each.
他们都围着公主站成一圈圈的，站得离门越近的人看起来就越骄傲。
they all stood in circles round the princess, and the nearer they stood to the door, the prouder they looked.
那些总是穿着拖鞋的仆人的侍从们，几乎让人不敢看，他们在门口骄傲地站着。”
the servants’ pages, who always wore slippers, could hardly be looked at, they held themselves up so proudly by the door.”
“那一定很可怕，” 小格尔达说，“但是凯赢得公主了吗？”
“It must be quite awful,” said little Gerda, “but did Kay win the princess?”
“如果我不是一只乌鸦，” 他说，“我自己就会娶她了，尽管我已经订婚了。
“If I had not been a crow,” said he, “I would have married her myself, although I am engaged.
他说得就和我讲乌鸦语时一样好，这是我从我温顺的爱人那里听来的。
he spoke just as well as I do, when I speak the crows’ language, so I heard from my tame sweetheart.
他非常自在又讨人喜欢，还说他不是来向公主求婚的，而是来聆听她的智慧的；
he was quite free and agreeable and said he had not e to woo the princess, but to hear her wisdom;
公主对他很满意，他也对公主很满意。”
and he was as pleased with her as she was with him.”
“哦，那肯定是凯，” 格尔达说，“他那么聪明；
“oh, certainly that was Kay,” said Gerda, “he was so clever;
他能心算和做分数运算。
he could work mental arithmetic and fractions.
哦，你能带我去宫殿吗？”
oh, will you take me to the palace?”
“这问题问起来很容易，” 乌鸦回答，“但是我们要怎么做到呢？
“It is very easy to ask that,” replied the crow, “but how are we to manage it?
不过，我会跟我温顺的爱人说说这件事，征求她的意见；
however, I will speak about it to my tame sweetheart, and ask her advice;
因为我必须告诉你，要让像你这样的小女孩进入宫殿是非常困难的。”
for I must tell you it will be very difficult to gain permission for a little girl like you to enter the palace.”
“哦，是的；
“oh, yes;
但是我会很容易就得到许可的，” 格尔达说，“因为当凯听到我在这里，他会马上出来把我接进去的。”
but I shall gain permission easily,” said Gerda, “for when Kay hears that I am here, he will e out and fetch me in immediately.”
“在这栅栏这儿等我，” 乌鸦说，边说边摇着头飞走了。
“wait for me here by the palings,” said the crow, wagging his head as he flew away.
乌鸦回来的时候已经是深夜了。
It was late in the evening before the crow returned.
“呱，呱，” 他说，“她向你问好，这是她从厨房给你拿的一个小面包卷；
“caw, caw,” he said, “she sends you greeting, and here is a little roll which she took from the kitchen for you;
那里有很多面包，她觉得你一定饿了。”
there is plenty of bread there, and she thinks you must be hungry.
你不可能从正门进入宫殿。
It is not possible for you to enter the palace by the front entrance.
穿着银色制服的卫兵和穿着金色制服的仆人不会允许的。
the guards in silver uniform and the servants in gold livery would not allow it.
但是不要哭，我们会设法让你进去的；
but do not cry, we will manage to get you in;
我的爱人知道一个通到卧室的小后楼梯，她也知道钥匙在哪里。”
my sweetheart knows a little back - staircase that leads to the sleeping apartments, and she knows where to find the key.”
然后他们穿过大道走进花园，树叶一片接一片地飘落，他们看到宫殿里的灯光也是这样一盏盏熄灭的。
then they went into the garden through the great avenue, where the leaves were falling one after another, and they could see the light in the palace being put out in the same manner.
乌鸦把小格尔达带到半掩着的后门。
And the crow led little Gerda to the back door, which stood ajar.
哦！小格尔达的心因为焦虑和渴望而跳动得多么厉害啊；
oh! how little Gerda’s heart beat with anxiety and longing;
就好像她要去做什么错事一样，然而她只是想知道小凯在哪里。
it was just as if she were going to do something 错事，and yet she only wanted to know where little Kay was.
“一定是他，” 她想，“有着那样清澈的眼睛和长长的头发。”
“It must be he,” she thought, “with those clear eyes, and that long hair.”
她能想象到他像在家时一样对她微笑，那时他们坐在玫瑰丛中。
She could fancy she saw him smiling at her, as he used to at home, when they sat among the roses.
他看到她肯定会很高兴，听到她为了他走了这么远的路，也会知道家里因为他没回来是多么难过。
he would certainly be glad to see her, and to hear what a long distance she had e for his sake, and to know how sorry they had been at home because he did not e back.
哦，她感到多么高兴又害怕啊！他们现在在楼梯上，楼梯顶上的一个小壁橱里亮着一盏灯。
oh what joy and yet fear she felt! they were now on the stairs, and in a small closet at the top a lamp was burning.
在地板中间站着那只温顺的乌鸦，它把头转来转去，凝视着格尔达，格尔达按照祖母教她的方式行了屈膝礼。
In the middle of the floor stood the tame crow, turning her head from side to side, and gazing at Gerda, who curtseyed as her grandmother had taught her to do.
“我的未婚夫对你评价非常高，我的小姑娘，” 温顺的乌鸦说，“你的生平经历，可以这么说，非常感人。
“my betrothed has spoken so very highly of you, my little lady,” said the tame crow, “your life - history, Vita, as it may be called, is very touching.

we will go straight along this way, then we shall meet no one.”

“It seems to me as if somebody were behind us,” said Gerda, as something rushed by her like a shadow on the wall, and then horses with flying manes and thin legs, hunters, ladies and gentlemen on horseback, glided by her, like shadows on the wall.
“它们只是梦，” 乌鸦说，“它们是来取大人物们外出打猎的思绪的。”
“they are only dreams,” said the crow, “they are ing to fetch the thoughts of the great people out hunting.”
“这样更好，因为我们能更安全地看看他们在床上的样子了。
“All the better, for we shall be able to look at them in their beds more safely.
我希望当你得到荣耀和恩宠的时候，你会有一颗感恩的心。”
I hope that when you rise to honor and favor, you will show a grateful heart.”
“你完全可以放心。” 森林里来的乌鸦说。
“You may be quite sure of that,” said the crow from the forest.
他们现在来到了第一个大厅，大厅的墙壁挂着玫瑰色的绸缎，上面绣着人造花朵。
they now came into the first hall, the walls of which were hung with rose - colored satin, embroidered with artificial flowers.
在这里梦又一次从他们身边掠过，但是速度太快了，格尔达都分不清那些皇室成员。
here the dreams again flitted by them but so quickly that Gerda could not distinguish the royal persons.
每个大厅看起来都比前一个更华丽，这足以让任何人眼花缭乱。
Each hall appeared more splendid than the last, it was enought to bewilder any one.
最后他们来到了一间卧室。
At length they reached a bedroom.
天花板像一棵巨大的棕榈树，有着最昂贵水晶制成的玻璃树叶，在地板中央，两张床像百合花一样，从一根金茎上吊着。
the ceiling was like a great palm - tree, with glass leaves of the most costly crystal, and over the centre of the floor two beds, each resembling a lily, hung from a stem of gold.
一张床上躺着公主，是白色的，另一张是红色的；
one, in which the princess lay, was white, the other was red;
格尔达要在这张红色的床上找小凯。
and in this Gerda had to seek for little Kay.
她把一片红色的花瓣推开，看到一个棕色的小脖子。
She pushed one of the red leaves aside, and saw a little brown neck.
哦，那一定是凯！她大声地叫出他的名字，并且把灯举到他上方。
oh, that must be Kay! She called his name out quite loud, and held the lamp over him.
梦骑着马冲回房间。
the dreams rushed back into the room on horseback.
他醒了，转过头来，不是小凯！王子只是脖子像他，不过他还年轻又英俊。
he woke, and turned his head round, it was not little Kay! the prince was only like him in the neck, still he was young and pretty.
然后公主从她的白色百合床里探出头来，问发生了什么事。
then the princess peeped out of her white - lily bed, and asked what was the matter.
然后小格尔达哭着讲了她的故事，以及乌鸦们为帮助她所做的一切。
then little Gerda wept and told her story, and all that the crows had done to help her.
“你这个可怜的孩子，” 王子和公主说；
“You poor child,” said the prince and princess;
然后他们赞扬了乌鸦，并且说他们不因为乌鸦所做的事生气，但是不能再发生这样的事了，这次它们应该得到奖赏。
then they praised the crows, and said they were not angry for what they had done, but that it must not happen again, and this time they should be rewarded.
“你们想要自由吗？”
“would you like to have your freedom?”
公主问，“还是你们更想被提升为宫廷乌鸦的地位，并且厨房剩下的东西都归你们？”
asked the princess, “or would you prefer to be raised to the position of court crows, with all that is left in the kitchen for yourselves?”
然后两只乌鸦都鞠了一躬，请求得到一个固定的职位，因为它们考虑到自己的晚年，说想到自己有所依靠就会觉得很舒服，它们是这么说的。
then both the crows bowed, and begged to have a fixed appointment, for they thought of their old age, and said it would be so fortable to feel that they had provision for their old days, as they called it.
然后王子下了床，把床让给了格尔达 —— 他只能做到这样了；
And then the prince got out of his bed, and gave it up to Gerda, — he could do no more;
她躺了下来。
and she lay down.
她双手交叠，心想：“每个人对我都这么好，人和动物都是；”
She folded her little hands, and thought, “how good everyone is to me, men and animals too;”
然后她闭上眼睛，甜甜地睡着了。
then she closed her eyes and fell into a sweet sleep.
所有的梦又都飞回到她身边，它们看起来像天使，其中一个拉着一辆小雪橇，凯坐在雪橇上，向她点头。
All the dreams came flying back again to her, and they looked like angels, and one of them drew a little sledge, on which sat Kay, and nodded to her.
但这一切都只是一个梦，她一醒来就消失了。
but all this was only a dream, and vanished as soon as she awoke.
第二天，她从头到脚穿上了丝绸和天鹅绒的衣服，他们邀请她在宫殿里住几天，好好玩一玩，但她只请求得到一双靴子、一辆小马车和一匹拉车的马，这样她就可以到广阔的世界去寻找凯了。
the following day she was dressed from head to foot in silk and velvet, and they invited her to stay at the palace for a few days, and enjoy herself, but she only begged for a pair of boots, and a little carriage, and a horse to draw it, so that she might go into the wide world to seek for Kay.
她不仅得到了靴子，还得到了一个手笼，她穿戴整齐；
And she obtained, not only boots, but also a muff, and she was neatly dressed;
当她准备出发的时候，在门口，她发现了一辆纯金打造的马车，王子和公主的盾形纹章像星星一样在马车上闪闪发光，车夫、男仆和侍从都头戴金冠。
and when she was ready to go, there, at the door, she found a coach made of pure gold, with the coat - of - arms of the prince and princess shining upon it like a star, and the coachman, footman, and outriders all wearing golden crowns on their heads.
王子和公主亲自扶她上了马车，并祝她成功。
the prince and princess themselves helped her into the coach, and wished her success.
那只森林里的乌鸦，现在已经结婚了，陪她走了前三英里；
the forest crow, who was now married, acpanied her for the first three miles;
它坐在格尔达身边，因为它受不了背对着前进方向坐。
he sat by Gerda’s side, as he could not bear riding backwards.
那只温顺的乌鸦站在门口拍打着翅膀。
the tame crow stood in the door - way flapping her wings.
它不能和他们一起走，因为自从得到新职位后它就一直头疼，无疑是吃得太多了。
She could not go with them, because she had been suffering from headache ever since the new appointment, no doubt from eating too much.
马车里装满了甜饼，座位下面有水果和姜饼坚果。
the coach was well stored with sweet cakes, and under the seat were fruit and gingerbread nuts.
“再见，再见，” 王子和公主喊道，小格尔达哭了，乌鸦也哭了；
“Farewell, farewell,” cried the prince and princess, and little Gerda wept, and the crow wept;
然后，走了几英里之后，乌鸦也说了声 “再见”，这是最悲伤的分别。
and then, after a few miles, the crow also said “Farewell,” and this was the saddest parting.
然而，它飞到一棵树上，站在那里拍打着黑色的翅膀，只要还能看到在明亮阳光下闪闪发光的马车，就一直拍着。
however, he flew to a tree, and stood flapping his black wings as long as he could see the coach, which glittered in the bright sunshine.

小强盗女孩
LIttLE RobbER - GIRL
马车穿过一片茂密的森林，它像火把一样照亮了道路，晃得一些强盗睁不开眼，他们可不能容忍马车就这么不受干扰地过去。
the coach drove on through a thick forest, where it lighted up the way like a torch, and dazzled the eyes of some robbers, who could not bear to let it pass them unmolested.
“是金子！是金子！” 他们大叫着，冲上前去，抓住了马。
“It is gold! it is gold!” cried they, rushing forward, and seizing the horses.
然后他们把小骑手、车夫和男仆都打死了，把小格尔达从马车里拉了出来。
then they struck the little jockeys, the coachman, and the footman dead, and pulled little Gerda out of the carriage.
“她又胖又漂亮，而且她吃的是坚果仁呢，” 老强盗婆说，她长着长长的胡子，眉毛耷拉在眼睛上。
“She is fat and pretty, and she has been fed with the kernels of nuts,” said the old robber - woman, who had a long beard and eyebrows that hung over her eyes.
“她就像一只小羔羊一样；
“She is as good as a little lamb;
她尝起来会多美味啊！” 就在她说这话的时候，她抽出了一把闪闪发光的刀，那刀闪着可怕的光。
how nice she will taste!” and as she said this, she drew forth a shining knife, that glittered horribly.

“oh!” screamed the old woman the same moment;

for her own daughter, who held her back, had bitten her in the ear.

She was a wild and naughty girl, and the mother called her an ugly thing, and had not time to kill Gerda.
“她要和我一起玩，” 小强盗女孩说；
“She shall play with me,” said the little robber - girl;
“她要把她的手笼和漂亮衣服给我，还要和我一起睡在我的床上。”
“she shall give me her muff and her pretty dress, and sleep with me in my bed.”
然后她又咬了她妈妈一口，让她跳到空中，到处乱跳；
And then she bit her mother again, and made her spring in the air, and jump about;

she had broader shoulders and a darker skin;

She clasped little Gerda round the waist, and said, —

“they shall not kill you as long as you don’t make us vexed with you.

Ravens and crows flew in and out of the holes and crevices, while great bulldogs, either of which looked as if it could swallow a man, were jumping about;

In the large and smoky hall a bright fire was burning on the stone floor.

there was no chimney;

Soup was boiling in a large cauldron, and hares and rabbits were roasting on the spit.

And then the robber - girl drew a long knife from a chink in the wall, and let it slide gently over the reindeer’s neck.

the poor animal began to kick, and the little robber - girl laughed, and pulled down Gerda into bed with her.

the little robber - girl put one arm across Gerda’s neck, and held the knife in the other, and was soon fast asleep and snoring.

but Gerda could not close her eyes at all;

she knew not whether she was to live or die.
强盗们围坐在火边，唱歌喝酒，老妇人跌跌撞撞地走来走去。
the robbers sat round the fire, singing and drinking, and the old woman stumbled about.

It was a terrible sight for a little girl to witness.

they stopped at a little hut;

it was very mean looking;
屋顶几乎倾斜到地面，门非常矮，一家人进出的时候都得手脚并用地爬。
the roof sloped nearly down to the ground, and the door was so low that the family had to creep in on their hands and knees, when they went in and out.
屋里除了一个拉普兰老妇人之外没有别人，她正在一盏鱼油灯下煎鱼。
there was no one at home but an old Lapland woman, who was cooking fish by the light of a train - oil lamp.
驯鹿先讲了自己的事情（在他看来这是最重要的），然后讲了格尔达的故事，而格尔达冻得厉害，都说不出话来。
the reindeer told her all about Gerda’s story, after having first told his own, which seemed to him the most important, but Gerda was so pinched with the cold that she could not speak.

“oh, you poor things,” said the Lapland woman, “you have a long way to go yet.

then she tied her again on the reindeer, and he set off at full speed.

Flash, flash, went the beautiful blue northern lights in the air the whole night long.

And at length they reached Finland, and knocked at the chimney of the Finland woman’s hut, for it had no door above the ground.

She loosened little Gerda’s dress, and took off the fur boots and the mittens, or Gerda would have been unable to bear the heat;

and then she placed a piece of ice on the reindeer’s head, and read what was written on the dried fish.

After she had read it three times, she knew it by heart, so she popped the fish into the soup saucepan, as she knew it was good to eat, and she never wasted anything.

the reindeer told his own story first, and then little Gerda’s, and the Finlander twinkled with her clever eyes, but she said nothing.

“I know you can tie all the winds of the world with a piece of twine.

but she went to a shelf and took down and unrolled a large skin, on which were inscribed wonderful characters, and she read till the perspiration ran down from her forehead.

She cannot receive any power from me greater than she now has, which consists in her own purity and innocence of heart.

If she cannot herself obtain access to the Snow queen, and remove the glass fragments from little Kay, we can do nothing to help her.
离这儿两英里远就是白雪皇后的花园了；
two miles from here the Snow queen’s garden begins;

Some were like great porcupines, others like twisted serpents with their heads stretching out, and some few were like little fat bears with their hair bristled;
